BrainWorking Recursive Therapy ®
I totally blame BWRT ® for this…
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy®. It is just too good as a therapy! But more about that later. I am about to experience most peoples’ worst nightmare and it is the fault of BWRT®!
Liz Sharpe – In 5 weeks time, stand up on stage and be a comedian. Write your own material and perform on stage at a comedy gig in South East London!!
Why on earth would I do that?!!
I veer towards procrastination. I achieve and complete masses of things hugely successful if its a “Lets do this right now” situation – not so much, if its a “Lets think about this and maybe do it in 2 months time”!!
Several months ago, I was invited to give a talk to a local evening group. I chose a subject that I knew fairly well, and had 4 weeks to prepare. As I knew the topic but wanted the content to be fresh, I planned to write it close to the date. Have you noticed how life has a habit of getting in the way?! Running short of time is a frequent danger for a procrastinator but it generally works out fine in the end, so I was OK with this.
The task of writing the talk
5pm – Completed all clients, updated the notes and switched on my computer. 2 hours to go. Plenty of time to prepare a small talk. Then….. Total brain freeze. Mind completely blank. There was literally nobody home!
5:15pm – Put the kettle on and made another coffee and tried again. Still no success. Couldn’t begin to structure the talk or make logical sense of the points I needed to make.
5:30pm – 90 minutes to go. Becoming ridiculous. Not getting past the opening line of Hello – I’m Liz, and I’m a hypnotherapist.
How am I feeling at this point?
Feeling slightly uncomfortable now. I’m normally able to pull stuff together with ease at the last minute and this isn’t the norm for me. But my brain cells really weren’t firing up!! You see that’s the problem with adrenaline. The fight or flight response triggers your amygdala and you get a hit of adrenaline – that does things like speed up your heart, change your blood pressure, pump extra blood to the muscles so you can run fast or fight hard. It also takes blood from your processing / logical part of the brain and puts the emphasis on the lizard brain – meaning that you can’t think clearly. So, if you are ever on stage and can’t find the words – that’s why!
But back to my issue. Its 5:30pm – I have 90 minutes to prepare the talk, jump in the car and get there, and I can’t work out what to say!! Subtle irony in that my talk was on anxiety and ways to manage it, particularly around public speaking!
5:45pm – A colleague popped up on facebook (a great distraction for a procrastinator!) and I put in a call for an emergency Skype BWRT® session.
6:15pm – Breathing a sign of relief, as I am seeing myself as confident, laughing, engaging the audience, and having a great time. Fabulous. I scribbled some pointers on a back of an envelope, grabbed some props, got in the car and at the workshop, delivered it exactly how I wanted, off the cuff.
Does BWRT® work?
So you may wonder why I’m blaming BrainWorking Recursive Therapy ®? I can show you testimonials of amazing results with amazing clients every single day. The style of therapy is brilliant. Content free – and gets rid of the problem permanently. I work with clients on anxiety, stress, depression, fears, phobias – you name it!! It was due to BWRT® that I left my day job to become a full time therapist!!
I am being tongue in cheek – but why am I blaming BWRT now?
Well, it was was really powerful preferred image. I was standing on stage, seeing people laugh at my jokes and hang on to my every word. I had always had Comedian down as an extreme job I would love to do but absolutely no chance / not in a million years. But taking away the fear, and thinking why not?
So on a whim, I signed up for a 5 week ‘Learn to be a stand up Comedian’ course!! Ends with a set at a gig for people that reach the required standard.
When combined with a ‘Life is Short – Live it. Love it’ belief and ‘What is the worst that can happen’ mentality, then it becomes far easier to forget the prospect that I might not be able to write any good jokes, or nobody might laugh.
Me? Although getting increasingly apprehensive now, I can’t escape the image of me appearing at Sunday Night at the Palladium!!! Oh and guess what – have to be there in 4 hours, need to drive to London and haven’t done my homework for the first night yet. Maybe I need to book in for a session of BWRT for my own procrastination!!
